Tracking RSS feeds and subscribers

Feedburner LogoBlogs present an interesting challenge in terms of tracking. In addition to pages, which are fairly easy to track using either software or services like Google Analytics. Blogs have RSS feeds which aren’t quite as easy to track.

The solution, at least for me, is Feedburner. Feedburner works by creating a new RSS feed hosted on it’s server which is based on the RSS feed your blog software creates. Feedburner analyzes hits to your feed and displays the resulting stats.

The main stat for RSS feeds is subscribers. This is the number of people who are accessing your RSS feed through a feed reader like Google Reader.

In addition Feedburner can list “Uncommon Uses” which lets you know when other people are republishing your content.

Like the other products in this post, FeedBurner is owned by Google and free.
